She slid her chair out and reached for her purse. The computer beeped as the screen went black. She winced and glanced down the hall toward his office. Nothing.
After grabbing her purse, she shut off the light and rushed down the hallway. Every few seconds she glanced over her shoulder to make sure he wasn’t there. At the door, she heaved a sigh of relief.
With one last look back before opening the door, she was home free.
“Excuse me,” a soft, feminine voice said.
Startled, Natalie let out a small scream and almost dropped her keys. Alexis Brandt stood in the now open doorway. From her blond hair to her perfectly manicured fingers, she was everything rich and fabulous. She was also Chase’s last girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend, if the tabloids were to be believed. Natalie’s roommate Rachel kept her informed of everything going on with her boss and everyone else in Hollywood.
“Is Chase still here?” Her voice was low and husky. Her perfume wafted in waves of floral scent to Natalie.
“I don’t-”
“I’m here, Alexis.” His voice was directly behind Natalie.
Her heart slammed against her chest. She’d almost made it. Alexis swept through the door, brushed past Natalie and wrapped her arms around Chase.
“Darling.” She kissed the air next to his cheeks. “I was so glad you called.”
Natalie tried to fade into the wall and slowly slide toward the open door.
“Natalie.” His voice was stern as if she’d done something wrong. Sure she’d tried to sneak out before he had a chance to walk her out, but he obviously had his hands full now.
“Yes?” Natalie didn’t dare turn around and watch the blonde pressing her over-endowed body into his.
“Wait here for a minute.” His words were directed at Natalie and he meant business.
She sighed and gazed longingly at her car a mere half block away in the parking lot.
