Dr. Dormann concludes in his report that incestuously inclined couples of the 1970s are running away from situations they firmly believe will disorganize them make them incapable of functioning, or performing normally. In many such instances, the couples involved have a perfectly valid reason for turning towards the family for sexual release. Their fears are not unfounded or irrational. And Dr. Dormann states in his report, "… in many cases fears are quite proportionate the threat, and we can keep them in control by developing skills and competence and by forcing ourselves to take action instead of stewing…"

Fear is not a reaction that occurs to people during their adult years. But it is not innate. It is a learned response. The Encyclopedia tells us that, "… fear of strangers and strange places commonly occurs around eight months of age and is not as some parents believe a sign of emotional instability, or an attempt to embarrass them. Rather, it is merely an attempt by the child to convey a message, a message that informs his parents he is being threatened by the environment, by the unfamiliar. He apparently feels more secure with people and places he knows, especially when he has formed close relationships with them…"

As the child matures he usually loses the greater amount of his fear of the unknown. But a goodly portion of the population, both men and women never do lose this early day fear of unknown places and unknown people. They cling to the familiar. They are only comfortable around people they know and trust. These are the people who eventually turn to incestuous conduct. They are, in the words of Sigmund Freud, "incest-prone".

As these incest-prone people reach puberty, they tend to fantasize sexual relations and masturbate. Invariably these masturbatory sessions include fantasies of incest. The boy visualizes himself in bed with his mother, and the girl with her father, or in any familiar situation that comforts them. It is a short and easy step for such incest-prone people from the fantasy to the reality of incest. Indeed, the act of having sex with mother is more natural than having sexual relations with a total stranger.
