„Milion nowych dni” to powieść, której akcja rozgrywa się dwa wieki później, i w której pewien wierny małżonek zostaje uwikłany w biologiczny eksperyment związany z konsekwencjami nieśmiertelności. Powieść ciekawie napisana, niemal sensacyjna, ale wartka akcja to nie jest jej jedyny walor. Ciekawe jest również tło, w którym rzecz się dzieje. Autor wykazuje się wieloma nowymi, świeżymi pomysłami na temat, jak może wyglądać codzienne życie za dwieście lat. Taki np. klucz hotelowy wysyłający impulsy działające na fluoryzujące pod ich wpływem strzałki na ścianach korytarzy, i w ten sposób wskazujące drogę do własnego pokoju, mógłby być stosowany już dziś.

Człowiek z dwóch czasów

Bob Shaw jest jednym z czołowych angielskich autorów science fiction. W powieści „Człowiek z dwóch czasów”, wykorzystując możliwości fantastyki, stwarza interesującą sytuację psychologiczną.

El palacio de la eternidad

El libro relata las aventuras y desventuras de Mack Tavernor, un terrestre que vive en un planeta alejado de las rutas comerciales de la Federación Terrestre. Mack resulta ser un veterano de la guerra que los terrestres mantienen con los psitcanos, una raza alienígena que persigue nuestro exterminio. También aparecen en escena los “egones” que vienen a ser como las almas de los humanos, que viven en el espacio sideral. Aquí es donde el libro está mejor logrado, pues esto de los egones es una idea creo bastante original. Es bonito ver como estos seres tienen un papel crucial en la guerra contra los psitcanos, aunque su desenlace no esté bien resulto desde el punto de vista argumental.

Orbitsville

Orbitsville ranks alongside Larry Niven’s Ringworld and Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama as one of the great imaginative constructs of SF. Deftly written, it powerfully conveys the immensity of space and the infinite possibilities it offers.

Orbitsville Departure

A sequel to Orbitsville. Alien beings, Ultrans, built an enormous sphere, millions of times the size of Earth, which contains its own sun as a trap for sentient beings of the universe. The artificial world attracts the world’s population to such an extent that soon Earth is a half-deserted historical curiosity. Scientist Garry Dallen learns of the Ultrans’ plans second before Orbitsville and its population are whisked millions of light years into outer space.

El “vidrio lento” es un cristal que absorbe poco a poco la luz de los sucesos que ocurren delante de él, los cuales resultan visibles meses o años después. A partir de esta idea, Bob Shaw construye una excelente y a la vez original novela. La profética visión de lo que podría ser un invento de estas características y la problemática social de su uso, desde el crimen casi perfecto hasta la verificación por parte de la justicia al cabo de cinco años— hacen de esta novela una obra maestra de ciencia ficción en el mas puro sentido de la palabra.

The Peace Machine

First published in 1971 as Ground Zero Man, this novel was revies by the author and published in 1985 as The Peace Machine. It is 1988, and an obscure scientist, Lucas Hutchman, has made a momentous discovery. He can build a neutron resonator: a device which, once triggered, will detonate every nuclear warhead in the planet. In a future on the brink of nuclear suicide (Damascus has just been wiped out by a terrorist nuclear bomb), the temptation is irresistible to use his invention as a gun held against the heads of the world’s leaders. Lucas constructs the machine, and then sends plans to prominent scientists and politicians everywhere, giving a deadline on which he will activate it. They will be forced to dismantle their weapons, and the world will breathe again. Very quickly, Lucas discovers that he has pitched himself into a world with which he is ill-equipped to cope: the world of secret agents, espionage, kidnapping and murder. His problem is to stay under cover and survive long enough to implement his plan.
