La trama gira en torno a la estancia de Genly Ai, un enviado terrestre del Ekumen, al planeta Gueden, también conocido como Invierno por atravesar una edad glaciar. El Ekumen podría definirse como una liga interplanetaria compuesta por los “mundos inhabitados” (es decir, por aquellos que no son ni los planetas conocidos ni sus colonias) cuyo propósito, en este caso, es que Gueden se una a la alianza. Por ello, Genly Ai lleva dos años en Karhide (uno de los dos reinos más importantes de Gueden) esperando una audiencia con el rey. Cuando llega el momento, todo apunta a que el rey no goza de un juicio sano, ve al Enviado como una amenaza y a su primer ministro, Estraven, como ejemplo de traición. En un intento por conseguir en otra ciudad lo que ha resultado imposible en Karhide, Genly Ai viaja a Orgoreyn, donde Estraven cumple su exilio. El rechazo de los orgotas hacia Genly provoca el reencuentro entre éste y Estraven que, a partir de este punto, deberán convivir en duras condiciones.
