Das Lied der fernen Erde

Die erste Version dieses Romans, eine Kurzgeschichte von 12500 Wörtern, wurde von Februar bis April 1957 geschrieben und in dem amerikanischen Magazin „IF“ (Juni 1958) und im englischen Magazin „Science Fantasy“ (Juni 1959) veröffentlicht. Einfacher findet man sie vielleicht in meinen bei Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich erschienenen Sammlungen ‚The Other Side of the Sky‘ (1958) und ‚From the Ocean, Front the Stars‘ (1962). 1979 entwickelte ich das Thema in einem kurzen Filmentwurf, der im Magazin „Omni“ (Bd. 3, No. 12, 1980) erschienen ist. Seither wurde diese Version in der illustrierten Sammlung meiner Kurzgeschichten ‚The Sentinel‘ bei Byron Preiss/Berkley (1984) veröffentlicht, zusammen mit einer Einführung, die erklärt, wie sie entstanden ist und wie sie völlig unerwartet dazu führte, daß ‚2010: Odyssee Zwei‘ geschrieben und verfilmt wurde. Dieser Roman, die dritte und endgültige Fassung, wurde im Mai 1983 begonnen und im Juni 1985 fertiggestellt.

Die letzte Generation

Die letzte Generation (engl. Childhood’s End) ist ein Science-Fiction-Roman von Arthur C. Clarke aus dem Jahr 1953. Er thematisiert das Auftreten einer außerirdischen Rasse und das damit verbundene Aussterben der Menschheit  auf ihrer jetzigen Existenzebene. Anders als in ähnlichen Werken geht hier die Menschheit nicht durch Krieg und Zerstörung zugrunde, sondern durch die Wandlung der Kinder aller Menschen in eine andere Daseinsform und die folgende, selbst gewählte Kinderlosigkeit der Erwachsenen…

Nur noch eine Stadt existiert auf der Erde und ihre Bewohner leben in Luxus. Aber dennoch gibt es einen, der die Stadt verlassen will; und als es ihm gelingt, macht er eine verblüffende Entdeckung: Sie sind nicht die einzigen Überlebenden der Menschheit.

Earthlight

Outer space inhabitants have formed a new political entity, the Federation, and between the Federation and Earth a growing rivalry has developed. Earthlight is the story of this emerging conflict.

En el siglo XXII, los humanos habitan la Luna y Marte; una veterana de guerra ha fundado Crislam, doctrina religiosa impartida a través de módulos de realidad virtual; no queda comida natural, pero reciclando desechos se consigue cualquier plato; los pisos son pequeños, pero el Papa se opone a cada nuevo avance… La aparición de un asteoide que amenaza con caer sobre la tierra plantea el gran dilema de fondo: ¿hay que destruirlo en el espacio? ¿No será mejor dejar que caiga y contribuya a arreglar el problema de la superpoblación de la tierra? Con esos elementos, Clarke recupera las dotes que lo convirtieron en maestro del género: perspicacia para plantear un futuro lejano pero ya visible, capacidad de retar al intelecto del lector al tiempo que lo entretiene, y una ironia cargada de ingenio contundente.

Firstborn

The Firstborn — the mysterious race of aliens who first became known to science fiction fans as the builders of the iconic black monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey — have inhabited legendary master of science fiction Sir Arthur C. Clarke’s writing for decades.
