Grad i zvezde

Poput blistavog dragulja, grad je ležao na prsima pustinje. Nekada je bio podložan promenama i preinačenjima, ali sada je Vreme teklo mimo njega. Noći i dani nizali su se preko lica pustinje, ali na ulicama Diaspara vladalo je večno popodne i tama se nikada nije spuštala. Duge zimske noći mogle su mrazom da okuju pustinju, ledeći poslednje ostatke vlage u razređenom vazduhu Zemlje — ali grad nije osećao ni toplotu ni hladnoću. On nije stajao ni u kakvoj vezi sa spoljnim zbivanjima; bio je to svet za sebe. Ljudi su i ranije podizali gradove, ali nikada sličan ovome. Neki su trajali stolećima, drugi milenijumima, pre no što je Vreme razvejalo čak i njihova imena. Jedino se Diaspar uhvatio ukoštac sa Večnošću, braneći sebe i ono čemu je pružao okrilje protiv sporog osipanja vekova, razorne moći truljenja i pogubnog dejstva rđe. Od časa kada je sazdan, okeani su nestali sa površine Zemlje, a pustinja se rasprostrla čitavom planetom. Vetrovi i kiša satrli su u prašinu poslednje planine, a svet je bio odveć umoran da bi iznedrio nove. Grad za to nije mario; čak se i sama Zemlja mogla pretvoriti u prah i pepeo, a Diaspar bi i dalje štitio decu svojih tvoraca, noseći bezbedno njih i njihova dobra niz reku vremena…

O Fim da Infância de Arthur Clarke, é um dos outros clássicos da ficção científica e muitos inclusive o consideram a obra-prima de Clarke pela sua visão da humanidade. O livro pertence a uma era mais antiga do seu gênero e, embora contenha alguns elementos datados, permanece suficientemente atual para despertar a curiosidade do leitor moderno. Embora não tenha recebido nenhum dos grandes prêmios da ficção científica, esse fato pode ser justificado pela sua data de publicação, que antecede alguns desses prêmios. Out of the Sun

Also published as Out from the Sun. From Robert Silverberg’s “Earthmen and Strangers” anthology, 1966: Arthur C. Clarke is a true citizen of the world. Where he is at any given moment only his travel agent is likely to know: perhaps in New York conferring with his publishers, perhaps excavating sunken treasure off the coast of Ceylon, perhaps supervising the filming of a movie in London, perhaps studying the cored formations of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, perhaps watching a rocket blasting moonward from Cape Kennedy. He was born in England, but he is at home on any continent, and probably will be found sightseeing on Mars and Venus as soon as commercial service to those ports of call is inaugurated. As an acknowledged master of science fiction, Clarke’s presence in any anthology is almost mandatory. He works within the great tradition of H. G. Wells, combining literary artistry with scientific accuracy to create stories of stirring wonder and breathtaking provocativeness. Rama II

70 years after the events of Rendezvous with Rama, a second Raman vessel enters our solar system. Its arrival is expected and an expedition is sent to unlock more of Rama’s mysteries, but the crew are unprepared both for what they find and for the conflicts that arise between them. Rama II brings new characters into a new story and is mostly unrelated to the original and largely serves to set up its own sequels. It ends with three of the twelve astronauts stranded inside Rama as it travels out of the solar system, Nicole des Jardins Wakefield, Richard Wakefield and Michael O’Toole. Unlike Rendezvous with Rama, which depicted a utopian future and focused almost entirely on the hard science fiction elements regarding the scientific wonders of the alien spacecraft, Rama II and its sequels deconstruct Clarke’s vision of human colonies throughout the solar system through a global economic crisis that forced their almost total deactivation. Then follows a very different storytelling that brings forward contemporary issues like abortion, racism, drug abuse and organized crime. This new novel is the second in a trilogy about the mystifying world-ships and their flybys of our solar system. Unfortunately, the focus is no longer on alien mysteries, but on the petty concerns of an unlikely assortment of cosmonauts. The 12 specialists chosen to explore a second Raman craft passing through human space 70 years after the first are more involved with adultery, religion and media contracts than they are with scientific advancement. Not only are their actions unrealistic, but the chapter titles telegraph what comes next. The excitement of discovery that was present in the first book is altogether missing from this soap opera plot. (Publishers Weekly)
